How It Works

  1. 1. Count Your Sheets

Enter the total number of drywall sheets to be finished. Select the sheet size (4x8, 4x10, or 4x12). The calculator scales material quantities proportionally for larger sheets — a 4x10 sheet uses 25% more materials than a 4x8.

  2. 2. Select Finish Level

Choose your target finish level (1-5). Level 4 is the standard residential finish suitable for flat and eggshell paints. Each level requires progressively more compound. The calculator uses Gypsum Association standards for compound quantities at each level.

  3. 3. Calculate Compound

The calculator multiplies the per-sheet compound rate by the number of sheets, adjusts for sheet size, and adds the waste factor (default 15%). Results show total gallons and the number of 4.5-gallon pre-mixed buckets to purchase.

  4. 4. Calculate Tape and Screws

Paper tape is estimated at 12 linear feet per 4x8 sheet, divided into 500-foot rolls. Drywall screws are estimated at 32 per 4x8 sheet (12″ OC on walls), converted to pounds at 150 screws per pound.

  5. 5. Review Your Order

The calculator provides a complete finishing supply list: buckets of compound, rolls of tape, and pounds of screws. Round up to whole units when ordering. Pre-mixed compound has a shelf life, so buy only what you will use within a few months.

Pro Tip: Compound Application

Apply compound in thin, even coats rather than one thick pass. Each coat should dry completely (usually 24 hours) before sanding and applying the next coat. Three thin coats produce a smoother finish with less sanding than two thick coats. Sand between coats with 120-grit, and finish with 150-220 grit before priming.
