How It Works

  1. 1. Calculate Wall Area

Measure the length and height of each wall in feet. Multiply length × height for each wall, then add all walls together to get total wall area. Do not subtract windows and doors—the waste factor accounts for these openings.

  2. 2. Add Ceiling Area (If Applicable)

If you are drywalling the ceiling, measure room length × width in feet. Add this to your wall area for total square footage. Remember: 5/8" drywall is recommended for ceilings when joists are 24" on center (building code requirement).

  3. 3. Choose Sheet Size

Select sheet size based on wall height. 4x8 sheets (32 sq ft) are standard for 8-foot walls. 4x10 sheets (40 sq ft) reduce seams for 9-10 foot walls. 4x12 sheets (48 sq ft) minimize seams for tall walls but are heavier and harder to handle alone.

  4. 4. Apply Waste Factor

Add 10-15% for cuts around openings, breakage during handling, and fitting adjustments. Complex room layouts or vaulted ceilings need higher waste factors. The calculator divides total area by sheet size, applies waste, and rounds up to whole sheets.

Professional Tips

  • • Hang drywall perpendicular to studs/joists for maximum strength and fewer seams
  • • Stagger seams between rows—never line up joints (creates weak spots and visible lines)
  • • Use 5/8" drywall for ceilings (code requirement for 24" OC joists) and fire-rated walls
  • • Order extra sheets for large projects—matching lot numbers ensures consistent thickness
  • • Store drywall flat and dry—moisture warps sheets and weakens gypsum core
