When to use each volume:

  • Bank: For in-ground measurements and cut/fill calculations
  • Loose: For hauling estimates, truck trips, and disposal planning
  • Compacted: For fill specifications and compaction requirements

How It Works

This converter helps you translate between three volume states of excavated soil. Whether you are planning hauling logistics, specifying fill volumes, or estimating cut/fill balance, you need to know which volume state you are working with.

Three Volume States

  • Bank (In-situ): The volume of soil as it sits undisturbed in the ground. This is your base measurement for any excavation calculation.
  • Loose (Excavated): The volume after excavation. Always larger than bank volume due to swell. Use this for hauling, truck trip estimates, and disposal planning.
  • Compacted: The volume after mechanical compaction. Always smaller than bank volume. Use this for fill specifications and backfill requirements.

Conversion Formulas

  • Bank to Loose: Loose = Bank × (1 + Swell Factor / 100)
  • Bank to Compacted: Compacted = Bank × (1 - Shrink Factor / 100)
  • Loose to Bank: Bank = Loose / (1 + Swell Factor / 100)
  • Compacted to Bank: Bank = Compacted / (1 - Shrink Factor / 100)
