Calculate cut and fill balance with swell and shrink factors for earthwork grading projects.
This cut and fill calculator helps you determine the material balance for earthwork grading projects. It calculates whether you will have surplus material to export or a deficit requiring imported fill.
Enter the cut area and average cut depth, and separately the fill area and average fill depth. The calculator computes volumes for each independently before comparing them.
Swell factor is applied to the cut volume only. When soil is excavated, it expands:
Shrink factor is applied to the fill volume only. When soil is placed and compacted, it contracts:
Balance = Loose Cut Volume − Compacted Fill Volume. A positive balance means surplus material (export needed). A negative balance means a deficit (import needed). Values within 1% of each other are considered balanced.
Area to be excavated
Average depth of material to remove
Area to receive fill material
Average depth of fill required
Swell: 35% | Shrink: 15%
Surplus material to haul away
In-situ volume to excavate
After 35% swell
Volume of fill space
After 15% shrink
Swell factor (35%) applied to cut volume for hauling estimate. Shrink factor (15%) applied to fill volume for compacted placement. Balance = Loose Cut − Compacted Fill.
