Itemized Slab & Shed Base Estimate Guide

Turn separately measured excavation, base, footing, formwork, mesh, membrane and concrete scopes into an auditable local estimate.

Preparation checklist: define the work before asking for prices

What to measure and how to record it

Measure the physical work once, then preserve the handoffs. For excavation and base, record the footprint, excavation depth, base thickness, compaction basis, material density or supplier selling basis, cut/fill and disposal destination. Do not turn an excavation volume into a base order without the separately specified layer and supplier basis.

For footing concrete, list each strip or pad as length × width × depth, identify known overlaps once, then state order allowance and supplier increment. The Concrete Footing Quantity Calculator keeps net, allowance-adjusted and supplier-rounded concrete quantities distinct. For formwork, record every selected edge/run, formed height, number of courses and stock-board length; the Concrete Formwork Calculator keeps board-piece rounding visible.

For slab reinforcement and vapor control, do not infer a sheet count from area alone. Record selected mesh sheet dimensions, orientation, stated laps and spares; record membrane footprint, edge extension, roll dimensions, strip direction and seams. Use the Reinforcing Mesh Sheets Calculator and Under-Slab Membrane Calculator for their independent stock rounding. The live Footing & Formwork Quantity Takeoff guide and Mesh & Under-Slab Membrane Layout guide explain those takeoffs in detail; this page is the quote-scope handoff.

Connect each takeoff to one compatible order or quote line

Quantity-to-estimate handoff — use only matching local quotes
ScopeRecord to carry forwardDo not hide

Footing/formworkOrdered m³ and whole boards from separate takeoffsAllowance, increment, selected edges, stakes/bracing and reuse
Mesh/membraneWhole sheets and rolls—not only covered areaProduct, laps, extensions, offcuts, tape and protection
Concrete/labourMatching m³ rate or fixed quoted amountMix, minimum/load charge, pump/access, placing, finishing, curing and tax

Enter only compatible quantities and rates in the Slab & Shed Base Cost Calculator. It is a cost worksheet, not a layout or structural-design tool: it should price supplied quantities without applying a second package round. A blank price is unpriced, not zero; an all-in contractor quote must replace overlapping detailed lines rather than be added to them.

C15 itemized cost example: six labelled illustrative lines

The following independent fixture combines already-supplied compatible quantities. It is not a recommendation to use these quantities, rates, scope boundaries or currency. Excavation/disposal, delivery, pump/access, tax and contingency are excluded here and must be quoted or shown as incomplete if needed.

Synthetic C15 slab and shed base worksheet — illustrative USD only
Scope / basisCalculationExtension
Concrete2 m³ × USD 150/m³USD 300.00
Base material3 tonnes × USD 40/tonneUSD 120.00
Mesh4 sheets × USD 30/sheetUSD 120.00
Membrane2 rolls × USD 50/rollUSD 100.00
Formwork8 boards × USD 10/boardUSD 80.00
Fixed labour quoteUSD 400 fixedUSD 400.00
Direct totalUSD 300 + 120 + 120 + 100 + 80 + 400USD 1,120.00

Each line uses its own labelled selling unit. If the mesh rate is blank, retain the four-sheet line as unpriced and call the estimate incomplete—do not report USD 1,000.00 as a complete total. Record exclusions beside the total so a supplier or contractor can price the missing work without guessing.

Changed-input comparison: concrete quote changes, quantities do not

Keep every C15 quantity and other rate unchanged, but replace the illustrative concrete quote of USD 150/m³ with USD 175/m³. Concrete becomes 2 m³ × USD 175/m³ = USD 350.00, an increase of USD 50.00. The direct total becomes USD 1,170.00. This is a price change only: it does not remeasure concrete, revise base tonnes, add sheet/roll rounding or make excluded scopes priced.

Sources, scope, and limitations

NRMCA CIP 31 — Ordering Ready Mixed Concrete is official industry ordering context: confirm the selected mix, delivery conditions, minimums, discharge access and supplier increment locally. It does not choose a concrete quantity, mix, price or allowance for this synthetic worksheet.

Macsteel reinforcing-mesh data sheet and Stego Wrap product information are product-specific sources for checking an actual sheet or membrane system. They do not establish universal reinforcement, lap, membrane, support, tape or installation requirements.

Scope limit: drawings, ground conditions, engineer/designer, current product instructions, local authority, supplier and installer determine excavation, bearing, drainage, footing/slab dimensions, formwork, reinforcement, vapor control, concrete specification, access, safety and compliance. All quantities and USD rates below are synthetic C11–C15 fixture values, illustrative only—not recommendations.
