How It Works

  1. 1. Calculate Roof Area

Measure the surface area of your roof in square feet. For simple roofs, multiply length by width for each plane. For complex roofs, break into sections and add them together. Remember to measure the actual roof surface, not the house footprint—slope adds area.

  2. 2. Convert to Squares

The calculator converts your roof area to “squares” (100 sq ft units), the standard measurement in the roofing industry. A 2,000 sq ft roof = 20 squares. Suppliers price and sell materials based on squares, so knowing this number helps when comparing quotes.

  3. 3. Apply Waste Factor

A 10% waste factor is added to account for cuts, edge trimming, and damaged shingles. Simple roofs may use less (5-7%), while complex roofs with valleys and dormers need more (12-15%). This ensures you have enough material to complete the job without delays.

  4. 4. Calculate Bundles

The calculator multiplies squares (with waste) by bundles per square (3 for standard shingles, 4 for premium). Result shows field bundles needed. If you have ridges or hips, it also calculates separate ridge cap bundles based on linear feet of coverage.

  5. 5. Add Ridge Cap

Ridge cap covers the peak of your roof and any hip ridges. Measure linear feet of ridges and hips. One bundle of ridge cap covers approximately 33 linear feet. The calculator adds these to your field bundles for the total order quantity.

Why Waste Factor Matters

Roofing waste accounts for edge trimming, valley cuts, starter course, and a few damaged shingles during installation. Running short mid-project means delays and potential color mismatches if you buy from a different lot. A 10% waste factor is industry standard and prevents these costly interruptions. For DIY projects, err on the higher side—unopened bundles are usually returnable.
