How It Works

  1. 1. Measure Roof Perimeter

Measure the total linear feet along the roofline where gutters will be installed. This is typically the full perimeter of the roof eaves, minus any areas where gutters are not needed (such as over a porch that already has its own drainage).

  2. 2. Count Corners and Miters

Count inside and outside corners where the gutter changes direction. Each corner requires a special miter fitting. A standard rectangular home has 4 corners.

  3. 3. Calculate Gutter Sections

The calculator divides total gutter footage (perimeter plus waste) by the standard 10-foot section length and rounds up. This ensures you have enough material without cutting sections short.

  4. 4. Calculate Downspouts

One downspout is needed per 20 linear feet of gutter, with a minimum of 2 per run. Each downspout runs from the gutter outlet to the ground — its length equals building height plus 2 feet for the bottom elbow extension away from the foundation.

  5. 5. Add Fittings

End caps seal the open ends of gutter runs (2 per run). Each downspout needs 2 elbows — one at the top (outlet) and one at the bottom (extension). Corner miters are counted from your input.
