Calculate ridge cap and hip cap shingle pieces and bundles for your roofing project.
The ridge is the peak where two roof planes meet (the horizontal line at the top). Hips are the angled ridges on hip-style roofs running from the ridge to the eave corners. Measure each in linear feet.
Standard 5" exposure means 2.4 cap shingle pieces per linear foot (12 ÷ 5 = 2.4). Tighter exposure (e.g., 4") uses more pieces; wider exposure (e.g., 6") uses fewer.
A 10% waste factor is standard for cuts and fitting at ridge and hip ends. The calculator adds waste to the total linear footage before computing pieces and bundles.
A standard bundle covers approximately 33.3 linear feet of ridge or hip. The calculator divides total footage (with waste) by this coverage and rounds up to whole bundles.
Ridge vent length equals your ridge length (not hip length). If installing ridge vent, the vent goes under the cap shingles along the main ridge only. The calculator shows ridge vent footage as an informational output.

Hip caps install at a steeper angle than ridge caps, which can use slightly more material per linear foot. When in doubt, order an extra bundle — most suppliers accept returns on unopened bundles.
