How many bags of pea gravel do I need?

Calculate your area (m²), multiply by depth (m) to get volume, then multiply by pea gravel density (1.6 t/m³) to get weight in tonnes. Convert to kg and divide by bag size (25kg or 50kg), rounding up. Our calculator does this automatically — just enter area and depth.

What depth should I use for pea gravel?

Recommended depths: decorative garden beds 25–50mm, paths and walkways 50–75mm, playground surfaces 75–100mm, drainage applications 100–150mm. Thinner layers need edging to contain the gravel and prevent spreading.

How much does pea gravel weigh?

Pea gravel has a bulk density of approximately 1.6 t/m³ (1,600 kg/m³). A 1m² area at 50mm depth needs 0.05 m³, which weighs 80 kg — about 3–4 bags of 25kg. Our calculator shows both the bag count and the total weight.

Should I order by bags or by the tonne?

For small projects (under 2 m³), bags are practical. For larger areas, ordering by the tonne from a landscape supplier is more economical. Our calculator shows both bag count and volume/weight so you can compare costs either way.

Does pea gravel compact?

Accepted Answer

Pea gravel has minimal compaction because of its round shape — the stones roll rather than lock together. For our bag count calculation we use a compaction factor of 1.0. Add 10–15% waste for spillage during installation.

Can I use pea gravel for drainage?

Accepted Answer
