French Drain Calculator

Calculate the drainage gravel needed for a French drain trench. Accounts for pipe outer diameter displacement using the same formula as engineering references: π × (OD/2)² × length.

How It Works

This calculator estimates the drainage gravel needed to fill a French drain trench, accounting for the volume occupied by the drain pipe.

How to Use

  1. Enter trench length: Total length of the French drain run in metres.
  2. Enter trench width: Typical width 300–600mm (0.3–0.6m).
  3. Enter trench depth: Depth from surface — typically 0.3–1.0m.
  4. Select pipe size: 100mm, 150mm, or 200mm outer diameter. Or enter a custom diameter.
  5. Set waste factor: 10–15% for aggregate spillage.

Formula

Trench volume: Length × Width × Depth
Pipe displacement: π × (OD/2)² × Length
Net gravel: Trench Volume − Pipe Displacement
Order quantity: Net Gravel × (1 + Waste %)
Weight: Order quantity × 1.45 t/m³ (drainage rock)
