Utility Calculators & Converters

Support tools that make the math easier. Convert between measurement systems and translate volume to weight for any construction material.

What These Calculators Cover

Construction projects often involve measurements in mixed units. Plans may be in meters while lumber is sold in feet. Gravel is ordered in cubic yards but delivered by the ton. These converters bridge the gap between how you measure and how suppliers sell.

Unlike material-specific calculators, these tools work across every project type. They're the utility belt — you'll reach for them alongside your other calculators whenever units don't line up.

Each Calculator Explained

Unit Converter

Converts between metric and imperial measurements across four categories: length (meters/feet/inches), area (m²/ft²), volume (m³/ft³/gallons/liters), and weight (kg/lbs/tons). Handles all common construction unit pairs in a single tool.

Use when: Working with plans or specifications in a different measurement system than your local suppliers use. Common scenario: reading European product specs (metric) while buying from a US supplier (imperial), or vice versa.

m³ to Tonnes Calculator

Converts volume (cubic meters or cubic yards) to weight (tonnes or tons) for construction materials. Includes built-in density values for common materials like concrete, sand, gravel, topsoil, asphalt, and crushed stone. You can also enter a custom density.

Use when: You've calculated a volume (from our gravel calculator or excavation calculator) but your supplier quotes in tonnes. Or when planning truck loads, since trucks have weight limits, not volume limits.

Tips for Working with Units

  • When ordering from different suppliers, double-check which unit system they use. A “ton” means different things in different countries (US short ton = 2,000 lbs, metric tonne = 2,205 lbs).
  • Material density varies with moisture content. Wet sand weighs significantly more than dry sand. If ordering by weight, ask your supplier about moisture conditions.
  • Truck capacity is limited by both volume and weight. A standard dump truck holds about 10-14 cubic yards but is often weight-limited to 20-25 tons, which matters for dense materials like concrete and stone.
  • Keep a consistent unit system throughout your project to avoid conversion errors. Pick metric or imperial and stick with it until the final order.
